A sketch of the Battle of Camp Wildcat that occurred on October 21, 1861, outside of Camp Wildcat in present-day Laurel County. This sketch was created during the battle by Alfred E. Matthews, Thirty-First Regiment, Ohio. Middleton, Strobridge & Co., lithographer. Courtesy Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division, Washington, DC (LC-DIG-pga-11689 DLC),

Zollicoffer’s death in the salvo of bullets after his mistake was realized is credited historically to Colonel Fry, though the Union commander never officially claimed it. The death of their leader (and a reportedly drunk major general who should have assumed command) sent the CSA into disarray, and Union forces were able to overwhelm the Southern troops.

Northern newspapers celebrated the significant Union victory at Mill Springs, which, along with the victories at Ivy Mountain and Middle Creek, built momentum toward the Union victory at the Battle of Forts Henry and Donelson and helped to cement federal control over Kentucky.
